About this listen

Billionaire playboy Hunter Cavalier believed he had experienced everything life could offer—until Simone Dreadmore, the sister of his closest friend, entered his world. Entrusted with her care during her brother's absence, Hunter anticipates a quiet, uneventful time.

But Simone is anything but ordinary. With a boldness that both intrigues and captivates him, she challenges Hunter's expectations at every turn. As they spend more time together, Hunter discovers a side of himself he never knew existed—a side awakened by Simone's fierce independence and undeniable allure.

When Simone becomes ensnared in a web of accusations, Hunter stands steadfastly by her side, prepared to shield her at any cost. Together, they flee the city, embarking on a journey of love and self-discovery, seeking refuge in each other's embrace.

Their newfound happiness faces jeopardy when Simone's brother returns, casting a shadow over their blossoming romance. Confronted by adversity and betrayal, Hunter and Simone navigate the turbulent waters of love and loyalty, steadfast in their determination to carve a future together against all odds.

In Once Upon a Crime, a modern retelling of Rapunzel, passion collides with danger, and love knows no bounds. Will Hunter and Simone defy the odds and find their happily ever after, or will they succumb to the shadows that threaten to consume them? Only time will tell as they embark on a thrilling adventure that will test the limits of their love and resilience.

Once Upon a Crime by Mackenzie Stowe delivers a satisfying dose of suspense, keeping the tension simmering from the first chapter to the final reveal. Stowe’s pacing is tight, and the atmosphere has that classic whodunit pull that makes you want to read “just one more chapter.”

One of the standout elements is how effectively the real culprit manipulates facts and perceptions throughout the story. The misdirection feels organic rather than forced, and in hindsight, the clues were there all along — just cleverly obscured. That balance between fairness and deception is hard to pull off, and Stowe manages it well.

The female narrator pulls off a vulnerability and is effective. A recommended read.
