About this listen
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.
Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.
But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

Ridoc continues to be my favourite character, and the actor's performance only solidifies this. He makes me laugh out loud - even though I knew it was coming this time, I still couldn't control myself during "I 👊🏻 HATE 👊🏻 SEWING! 👊🏻"! I know it's a tiny moment in the book, but it was already my favourite scene, and the additional performance and sound effects only elevates it more for me. And then he manages to give a beautifully heart-rending performance during his talk with Violet, where you can feel the complete maelstrom of emotions going through his mind, topped of with his reminder that he might joke, but he does take the important things seriously too. The character is brilliant, and the actor just brings him to absolute top tier 'protect him at all costs' status.
Having the different voices and a slower pace is so, so helpful in this section. It really helps you sink in to each different place the Quest Squad visits, identifying the different quirks depending on their chosen god, and feel like you're actually spending some time in these places, rather than the flying visits the eyeball read or 'straight' audiobook gives the impression of. It also adds another layer of shock and awe to the various trials they have to go through. It feels like it gives you time with the characters, absorbing what they're witnessing and watching each of them develop due to their experiences.
I feel it also adds an extra 'whomp' to Violet and Xaden's relationship. I maintain that it's utterly, ridiculously perfect that Rebecca Yarros has somehow managed to give us a slow burn within an existing relationship, and this version just adds fuel to that fire. The tension sparks and crackles between the two actors and, while I'm not actually the biggest fan of their performances in "those" scenes (they're just not as 'natural' feeling or sounding as they were in Iron Flame), the bursting of that bubble is still immensely satisfying. Similarly, Xaden's fight and slow descent is really well done, and again the actor brings every emotion to bear when portraying our beloved shadow daddy.
There are of course plenty of questions that remain, and new ones to be answered, but I feel a whole lot clearer on what those are now I've listened to this. Bring on book four!
