About this listen

*** THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER ***

In a beautiful southern Spanish town, where the sea sparkles and orange blossoms scent the air, the gates of a brand new apartment complex, La Joya de Andalucía, glide open to welcome the new owners. Anna and Austen MacDonald, an Irish couple, are preparing to enjoy their retirement to the full. But the demands of family cause problems they have never foreseen and shake their marriage to the core. Sally-Ann Connolly Cooper, a feisty Texan mother of two young teenagers, is reeling from her husband's infidelity. La Joya becomes a place of solace for Sally-Ann, in more ways than one. Eduardo Sanchez, a haughty Madrileño, has set out with single-minded determination to become El Presidente of the complex's management committee. But pride comes before a fall. Jutta Sauer Perez, a sophisticated German who aspires to own her very own apartment in La Joya, works hard to reach her goal. Then the unthinkable happens. As their lives entwine and friendships and enmities develop, it becomes apparent that La Joya is not quite the haven they all expect it to be....

Enjoyed the idea of the story and the writing but the awful narration ruined it in places especially the attempts at Texan and Irish accents which sounded much more Scottish! Some female characters sounded like men.
Do authors not listen to the recordings once done? If it was my book I’d want to listen to make sure the characters were believable when narrated. Quite off putting at times.

Narration dodgy but good story

Absolutely loved this . Narrator bought all the characters to life. Excellent. Highly recommend this book.

Very Intriguing

Was glad other reviews said they found it slow initially because I struggled to pay attention as all the characters were introduced. It picks up and becomes more interesting though, and an easy listening.
Narration would have been improved by not trying the accents. The Texan ones were appalling and she took the notion of drawl way too seriously- the male character sounded like he needed speech therapy and was almost intolerable to listen to. Irish accents were all over the place which is unfortunate for an Irish author. She also made Anna sound geriatric even though she was only supposed to be in her 50s. Otherwise pretty good.

Slow start but improved
