Summary

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak.

But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission.

The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

What an enjoyable hour, both the support and the narrator were excellent. I will definitely look this author up and look for the narrator

In this short novella (or long short story), Don Winslow presents a group of disaffected young people whose anti-establishment stance brings them ever deeper into criminality, solipsism and violence. Winslow vividly conjures a disturbing time in American history, when the vital connection between generations seemed lost. Ed Harris narrates superbly, as you would imagine.

Atmospheric story that doesn't outstay its welcome

I listened to this on a flight and as the description says it stayed with me a while after I’d finished listening.

I connected with the idealism youth provides us with & then the harsh reality of life.

Packs a punch inside an hour & well worth a listen
