An excellent Le Carre story involving a wonderfully intriguing main POV character. Captured so beautifully by Michael Jayston’s narration. Truly a gifted performance. It is like listening to a master craftsman at work. You can almost imagine him preforming it on stage. We should ensure his recordings of Le Carre are not lost in favour of bland re recordings.

I found this a difficult book to maintain interest in. I love John Le Carre books as a rule but this book failed to pull me in and a really poor ending.

Disappointing and quite boring.

This is a first person narrative where the protagonist is a sanctimonious pedant.
It’s like being stuck at a dinner party next to an insufferable bore who alternates between talking to you about his ex and lecturing the whole table with his politics whilst virtue signalling with his shiny moral compass.
Of the 3 central characters, 2 of them are almost entirely represented via recalled conversations. The scenes of reported dialogue are separated by long sections of turgid exposition. There’s an early police interview scene where he almost provokes the sergeant into punching him in the face. This stayed with me as I spent most of the book wishing he had.

Unmitigated drivel, even for late period Le Carre.

Characters with schoolchild like personas, absolutely no plot to speak of.

After one quarter of the way through everything is basically tied up, after that it’s a chore to get through.

Gave up eighty percent of the way through, pure torture.

Amazed Le Carre’s publisher allowed this mediocrity to be printed.
