Billy Hopkins lived happily in a tenement home in Manchester with his large Catholic family. When war came, Billy was evacuated to Blackpool, where he was starved so his rations could feed his landlady's children.

On his return to Manchester, cruel blows were dealt to his family, but nothing could destroy Billy's fighting spirit.

being from the area where this book is set makes it all the more interesting. I read this in paper back when it first came out and hearing it on audio was even better. Kates story is next on me list.

Really enjoyed this book, and ready to read the next in the series.
Growing up in Manchester during WW2 in a poor Catholic family, Billy endures much, with some sorrow and much laughter. The book is semi-autobiographical, beautifully written by "our kid". This is not the first book in the series, but they don't need to be read first to love this wee gem.
