Summary

This definitive performance of Our Mutual Friend - Dickens' final completed novel - features expert narration by Meera Syal and an exclusive introduction written and read by Lucinda Hawksley, great-great-great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens. Hawksley is a biographer, author and lecturer whose wealth of knowledge on Dickens is both research-led and personal. She introduces us to the themes in Our Mutual Friend and tells us how they connect to the life of Dickens himself.

Full of both satire and social analysis, Our Mutual Friend looks at what could happen in Victorian England when a fortune passes to a working-class couple. The audiobook will enchant the listener with its larger-than-life characters, its poignant depiction of social injustice and the singular seed of hope with which Dickens hints at the possibility of a better tomorrow.

About the author

Having experienced the incarceration of his father, Charles Dickens had to abandon his studies at a young age and set to work in a factory so as to support himself. Despite his short-lived education, Dickens went on to write 15 novels, various articles, novellas and short stories. He lectured and led campaigns for children's rights and education and arguably became the ultimate self-made man.

About the narrator

Comedian, writer and actor Meera Syal rose to prominence as one of the creators of comedy sketch show Goodness Gracious Me and cemented herself as a household name in the UK portraying Sanjeev's grandmother, Ummi, in The Kumars at No. 42.

Multitalented Syal has penned novels, scripts and screenplays as well as lending her vocals to various songs and albums. Here she uses her voice to tell our Dickensian story with all the mastery you would expect from this talented performer.

Dickens, like Henry James, writes hugely long sentences and is never an easy read. Meera Syal is flawless, lucid, and able to give the characters easily distinguishable voices. She makes one of Dickens most rambling stories totally gripping. Her ability to assume different accents and tones of voice adds greatly to the listener's enjoyment.

Brilliantly read - a great performance

I have Enjoyed these Books imensly They are all works of Art and are Performed so well I only have a Couple more and feel That I will miss them a Great deal,Our Mutual Friend was not as Successful as the others at the time and I think it’s Fair to Say that Although still excellent in Each Category especially The Characters Who are all Fair Game as There are
The Ghastly and The Wonderful in all ends of the Spectrum,The Hideously Greedy and the Benevolent Kind and Those in between. People haven’t changed as much as one would expect and Socail Circumstances appear to be getting nearer rather than farther away The Question I felt left with was who was the Mutual Friend ? I believe Dickens was really also a Historian a Socail Commentator I don’t think he would be surprised if he had a time Machine .

This One Took me a little longer to Finish!

Loved Meera Syal in this! She really brings out both the humour and the sadness of the book. Her voice is so beautiful, I could listen to her all day.
I don't enjoy an overly dramatic, 'in your face' kind of narration and again Meera's style really suited me there.
The accents go a little wonky sometimes, but that didn't bother me so much.

My favourite Dickens and an excellent performance

This exquisite, multilayered, profound, comical and brilliantly described novel is superbly narrated by Meera Syal. Despite several negative reviews of Meera’s performance I can recommend this version highly. Don’t be put off by the poor reviews. You’ll find she transports you through this amazing story with great dramatic skill and voices extraordinarily well adapted to the many characters. Well done Meera! And what a novel! The writing is of the very highest quality. Dickens is a true master of all aspects of storytelling. All human life is here, along with acute psychological and social insights that continue to be relevant to our lives today. An absolute delight, laugh-out-loud funny as well as being rich in thoughtful characterisations …

Superb, engaging and very ‘Dickensian’ narration
