About this listen

A Richard and Judy Book Club Pick

Patricia Highsmith meets Louise Candlish in Out Of Her Depth. A simmering summer thriller, set across multiple time periods, about the choices you make as a teenager – and what happens when they go horribly wrong . . .

‘This book is, quite simply, sublime’ – Lesley Kara, author of The Rumour

Meet Rachel: an unassuming young woman from a quiet London suburb.

Picture the scene: a summer job at the beautiful Villa Medici in the Tuscan hills. A group of glamorous teenagers, used to a life of privilege. Lavish parties, heady sun-soaked days, backstabbing and bedhopping.

Until someone goes too far.

And nothing will ever be the same . . .

Readers love Lizzy Barber's Out Of Her Depth:

‘Really believable characters, a great plot, a wonderful setting . . . felt like I was in Italy soaking up the sun’
‘A tantalisingly written suspense . . . and a premise that delivers. Delicious.’
‘A terrific page turner with themes of those with privilege versus those without’
‘One of those totally addictive psychological thrillers that has you reading 'just one more page' and ignoring everything else you need to do until you finish it

Provides a clever, unexpected solution, by way of some fine writing (The Times, on My Name is Anna)

I have no idea how long it took me to listen to this excellent thriller, I found myself sometimes drifting off thinking of the fabulous scenery and atmosphere and then had to go back and start the chapter again as this really was heaven.
The narration was spot on and it sounded as if Louiza Patikas was fluent in Italian though she did surprisingly have a few mispronunciations of quite commonplace words in English but overall it was excellent and added to this gripping and full bodied thriller.
I loved the glamorous Diana, the shades of SWF subplot set in a social media world with so much more scope for admirers to find out all about their objects of affection than ever before.
I also fell for Sebastian but was surprised to hear he was blonde towards the end as being half Italian I had imagined him smouldering like a darker edgier Latin Hugh Grant.
Anyway not to give too much away but if you, like me, are overdue a sunshine holiday, this long hot summer with romance, intrigue, an entre to a glamorous elite party set and of course a fabulous murder mystery, then hop on board as this is for you.
Beautifully written with interesting characters, gorgeous scenery and plenty of thrills, twists and emotional rollercoasters, I really did enjoy every minute of this superbly crafted and spellbinding book.
I only wish I had been on a beach listening to it!
I will be looking forward to reading more of Lizzie Barbers thrillers soon I hope.

Young love and jealousy aren't a good match. I thoroughly enjoyed Lizzy Barber's look into the different dimensions of class and education. Well written and a great recommendation by Richard and Judy's Book Club.

Surely this will be made into a TV programme.

Out of Her Depth is exquisitely written and utterly captivating. Set in Florence with a cast of characters both charming and insufferable in equal measures, Out Of Her Depth will keep you spellbound till the very end.
I can't find enough words to express how much I LOVED this book but here's few: enthralling, brilliant, exciting, unputdownable! Oh, and the narration is awesome as well - it's win win all round.

storytelling at its absolute finest.

There seems to be a glut of stories at the moment like this where the ‘poor’ girl is treated unkindly by the ‘rich’ girl. Neither particularly nice characters. There wasn’t one redeeming feature in any one of the characters, just empty greedy unkind selfish people, including the parents. It would have been interesting to have given more depth/background to the characters to find out why they were so awful. It held my interest enough to finish it but I’m glad to have done so. I think I’ll have a change of genre for my next book!

Great narration - Awful characters was glad to get to the end.
