About this listen

Some journeys change your life. Others destroy it.

Adia was living the dream until a brutal accident turned it into a nightmare. Injured and isolated, she wakes in a remote home under the care of a neighbor who watches her a little too closely. What begins as recovery soon twists into a fight for survival.

Thousands of miles away, Mandy is barely holding it together. Her marriage looks perfect, but her husband’s smile hides something darker. As buried secrets rise, Mandy begins to question everything, including her own reality.

Two women. Two unraveling lives. One collision will shatter everything.

Out of the Fog is a gripping psychological thriller about control, survival, and the women who refuse to stay lost.

I'd already encountered another psychological thriller story from this author so was less surprised by the story structure and more confident there would be a resolution. You get two paralell and seemingly unconnected stories involving co-ercive control and gaslighting with twists and set-back upon set-back for the sympathetic main character in each. One story starts in a foggy part of Eire where a seemingly lonely and bereft landlady from the USA takes a young American woman on honeymoon under her wing. There is a lot of tension and uncertainty about the sanity of our young widow who has been brought back to a USA woodland retreat to escape the police she's told want her for murdering her husband. The other thread is a wife besotted with her toddler son after trying so long to start a family. This nuclear family is translocated with her husband to Kazakstan from the USA when he gets a promotion. She strips away the secrets about her marriage and husband including the sinister reason for bringing them so far from home. There is a thrilling shoot-out back in the USA when the two stories collide. I found it a very satisfactory resolution. The author covers some disturbing topics and has a full trigger warning on her website.

The narrator does an excellent job of clarifying who is speaking by using accents, cadence and speech mannerisms. Male, female, foreigner and even rodent were all voiced well.
