First book of this author I've read, and wow. Gritty book telling a grimy story. Told in an original, gin-clear, spare style. Fantastic dialogue, dazzling characterisation, nasty nourish plot. It is literary fiction (big themes, ambitious writing, authority charisma) dressed as pulp fiction. Set in the American south in the 1920s I think, realistically portrays racist, sexist backwoods culture. Brilliantly read on audible
