About this listen

On a mild autumn afternoon in 1882, William Trenchard sits smoking his pipe in the garden of his comfortable family home. When the creak of the garden gate heralds the arrival of an unexpected stranger, he is puzzled but not alarmed. He cannot know the destruction this man will wreak on all he holds most dear.

It's very rare to be so engaged in such a long read. But I was so intrigued , so fascinated, by these characters, these old fashioned aristocrats that I fell in love!
I occasionally needed a rest between chapters - sometimes I was knee deep in the machinations, the deceit - but oh how disappointed I was when it ended and what an ending.
Try this story if you like old fashioned good solid story telling, I did and I'm hard to please😊

A twisty tale of love, lies, secrets and revenge. The story stays with you long after the last word is read. Highly recommended.

Keeps you guessing....

Loved this 19th century mystery. is the heir to the family estate really who he says he is? The tale is interwoven with well developed characters and interesting plot twists. Brilliant!

Full of twists and turns

I'm sorry but Michael Kitchen's narration was doing my head in. Thank goodness for the speed setting or I would have binned a good story. What a thoroughly unlikable lot the aristocracy are. If you're looking for edifying tale then I wouldn't recommend but if it's a tale of betrayal, depravity, abuse of privilege, dark secrets, and tragedy you're after the Painting the Darkness definitely delivers.

Try at 1.1x speed! Bearable!

The sign of a good book surely.
I enjoyed the narration, the story & the research. I think this was his 3rd novel & next book will be a more recent one as a comparison .

Tried FOUND WANTING next - big mistake....

Missed the story when it finished.
