Summary

The world died long ago.

The world died long ago, leaving only a few here and there to rebuild. Their world had once been grand and magnificent, but too much was lost in the years after the time known as the Dying. Knowledge that had been gained over centuries disappeared from the world, lost when those who carried that knowledge died with it.

The population has grown again over the last centuries, but the world has not regained its lost knowledge or former glory. A few things survive, here and there, and scholars seek to uncover more of their Ancients lost technology. But in the midst of that comes the threat of war with a rival nation. The latest in a long line of such wars for the Kingdom of Soulan.

Enter Parno McLeod, third son of King Tammon McLeod, who is unloved by his family and laughed at by the nobility. A brawling, drinking, womanizing playboy still in his teens, the common soldiers and people love Parno because he doesn't preen and pretend and Parno loves his people and his Land, even though he doesn't love his family.

When sent away by his family on an impossible mission, can young Parno overcome the odds and become the prince that destiny intends him to be?

So good that I legends to it all in two sittings, only sleep stopping me listening in between. Whether you like this or not parrot comes down to whether you're a stickler for details or not. Whether you have a good mind or not. It's a classic fantasy war novel, it does not waste time going over all tiny details for things that don't matter much. That's not to say that they don't manage to get the feelings across well, he does a great job at saying a lot in few words. Slow the story is not, as am the boring stuff isn't explained over twenty chapters, the pacing is excellent. I would not say it is the greatest story in the world, yet one of my favourite listens I've had. I'm heading straight into book 2.

also must be noted that the narration is some of the best ice I've heard. Going so far as to changing characters voiceswhen they're eating etc. You can really tell when someone truly loves what they do.

it's included in plus, so you have nothing to lose in giving it a try. And try you should.

excellent!

The writing is not Shakespeare or Leo Tolstoy. What you do get, and what I wanted (and I believe is getting so rare) is a straightforward adventure/war story.
No token characters. Lady doctor did not want to be a soldier. I can relate to that!
I could pick holes in the plot, but quite frankly you can suspend your disbelief easily.
The black sheep of a royal family comes good. You always knew he would, but that didn't matter. The narrator and the story just rolled along.
A story for the end of day, a glass of beer or a cup of tea, and just listen while you wind down.

Just a plain story
