Summary

When Oliver applied for a job in the Hell dimension on a whim, he didn't expect it to turn his whole world—or his heart—entirely upside down.

Recently graduated at twenty-six, and two months behind on rent, Oliver Barnes is desperate. So desperate, in fact, that he applies for a job in the Greed district of Hell's Pentagram. But when he misses his train and, subsequently, his job interview, he stumbles, instead, upon a strange little coffee shop in the middle of Purgatory's barren desert—and into an unexpected opportunity.

It isn't the job he came to Hell for, but maybe it's exactly the job he needs.

As he navigates the demon dimension and tries to survive the ridiculous shenanigans of his unholy co-workers, Oliver soon falls head-over-ass for a tentacled lawyer with electric fingers and a deadly-sharp grin. Together, they discover that, sometimes, love and happiness can be just a train ride away.

Join Oliver and the rest of the eccentric staff of The Passing Through Cafe in Nik Knight's new rom-com urban fantasy series, full of found family, embarrassing encounters, spicy situations, and love that crosses dimensions

No listen, hear me out: top score on story, characters, smut, monsters, world building, banter, flirting, pining. Low angst high fun. BUT OH MY GOD give the narrator a raise. Distinctive voices for all characters. I usually can't stand American narrators but this was a golden globe winning performance. A really good time.

Hate urban fantasy but loved this

A really wonderful story. Low / no angst but missing absolutely nothing for that fact. Superb writing, a truly delightful cast of characters (I do love a found-family trope) with a faultless performance by Michael Lesley. I can already tell that this will become a hallowed and loved comfort re-listen.

Cosy fantasy at its finest

I giggled, I cried and I fell in love with every character. Can't wait to read the rest. If you like Lily Maynes Goliaths of wrestlings series and Berries and Greed then this feels adjacent...Michael Lesley is fantastic too 🖤

Cute characters

It was a cute and enjoyable read, especially if you like of found family dynamics and slow-burn relationships. The main character and love interest had great chemistry, and I appreciated how their bond developed naturally over the course of the story. The worldbuilding was also a highlight, incorporating issues in the demon realm that cleverly mirrored real-world struggles.

That said, the book did feel overly long at times. Some scenes—especially between the various side characters—dragged on more than necessary, making it easy to lose track of who was who. While the supporting cast was endearing, they could also be a bit frustrating. Still, the variety of demons and their interactions created some fantastic imagery, giving the book a Lily Mayne-esque vibe that I really enjoyed.

Overall, it was an entertaining and engaging read. If the pacing had been a bit tighter, it would have been even better, but I’d definitely be interested in more books focusing on different characters in this world!

Enjoyable story that is well written with good world building and likeable characters. The narration is very good as well.
