It doesn’t seem a popular opinion but I was delighted to have a new narrator. I gave up on any audio books featuring Cathleen McCarron as I couldn’t stand her voice (purchasing hard copies or Kindle instead) so I was delighted to be able to listen to Karen Pirie again without the nasal and shrill previous narrator. Really interesting plot too, throughly enjoyed this - well worth the wait.

Narrator needs replacing. I cant believe how bad! Did you actually pay her, did someone not actually explain what the gig was? Im actually quite furious about how rubbish - did the “producers” not think to make her start again with even marks in the text where there should be pauses versus right in the middle of a phrase. Hell I think a few halts & silences were in the middle of words. Totally ruined Vals great book & prose.
Just rerecord it with the previous woman please not go with the TV actress who obviously is not a reader

The audio quality is a distraction. Frequent sections sound completely different in tone and volume, which makes it seem that they were re-recorded and then slotted in.
I love Val and her work, but this shoddy audio quality really ruins the listening experience.

I’ve loved the Karen Pirie novels and this didn’t disappoint - in terms of the story it was clever and compelling and sucked me, thankfully only for a short time, back into the early days of the pandemic.
I love this actors performance as Pirie one the tv series but she isn’t a great narrator, with mistakes in the script and inconsistent pace of speech. There were also annoying issues in the recording with volume variations and muffling of speech.

I always enjoy Val Mcdiermid books and unlike a lot of the reviewers I actually thought Past Lying was one of the best of the Karen Perie books. I agree the narration wasn’t the best and at times it almost seemed that it was read monotonously. However because the story was so strong after a while I forgot that. I do hope Karen considering going overseas is not going to be the last we read of her.
