When her mother dies in childbirth, Pearl Edwards is left in the care of her aunt, Annie Grafton. As Pearl grows older she is unable to remain ignorant of Annie's profession, despite her aunt's attempts to shield her. This was a wonderful trip into nostalgia and reminiscence having grown up in northern England, even though I’ve been away for quite some time. I loved the interwoven subtleties of culture and life, the strong female protagonists that faced the odds and adversity with a gritty determination and hearty pragmatism. Simply wonderful.
