Midnight on a moonlit beach. Six cops execute four thugs after a heinous crime. They are unaware that there is a witness to the executions. Thrilling action explores tactical, ethical, and criminal choices made by officers of the law. A stark image of moral ambiguity underpins their struggle to maintain courageous and precarious control of all-engulfing crime. Plain-dealing cops face scrutiny in an emotional journey through choices made in the day-to-day confrontation with evil.

Would you consider the audio edition of Plain Dealing to be better than the print version?

I don't know, really. They're both so good.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Thabethe the villain is so bad. So, so bad. And so well performed. I love him. If you know what I mean.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The final scene in the park is beautiful, but the scene just before that in the hospital is lyrically beautiful, too. Then the couple of traumatic scenes earlier on. I don't know. It's all wonderful.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The Ryder Sanction: cops on the hunt

Any additional comments?

I heard the second book first and then got to the others. It doesn't matter, really. They're all great stories in themselves. But it's nice now to see the thread running through all of them. And the theme. Which I take to be 'what is justice; what is morality, when the devil is in your sights?'

Best of the three

Where does Plain Dealing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Quite the best so far

What other book might you compare Plain Dealing to, and why?

Anything by Lee Child or Michael Connelly, really

What about Ian Patrick’s performance did you like?

Very commanding and quiet and firm, with lovely hints of characters without trying to do the full Monty

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are two or three very sad scenes that definitely bring forth some tears. Very moving indeed.

Any additional comments?

I like the Detective Mashego guy. I think I understand him, especially given what's happening in the world of crime these days.

Thrilling analysis of the real world of crime

Where does Plain Dealing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the first rank

What other book might you compare Plain Dealing to, and why?

The Killing Floor by Lee Child. The hero cops / good guys defend the weak and the villains are as villainous as you can imagine, and it is all very exciting. Jeremy Ryder is just like Jack Reacher.

What does Ian Patrick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He does the accents very well and his voice is strong and his speech is clear

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. It was very sad in a few places and it was brutal. But also honest.

Any additional comments?

I read the fourth book in the series before I heard this one, which is the third. I found the fourth one very violent - almost too violent - although very accurate about life in that area. Listening to this one made me realise that in fact the crime depicted is very accurate. Life is just like that in South Africa: very violent, with crime out of control, and we need the force of law and order. This was told very well in this story.

Violent but real and exciting

I read this book two years ago and loved it. Now I have listened to it, too, and it's even better. The scene at the airport is so harrowing and sad. Very good writing and very good narration. The accents work very well and the whole fabric of it is well put together.

Second time around even more brilliant

Speaking as a retired detective from Durban, I can't believe how fantastic this is. It is so relevant to what's been happening in Natal. Hit squads. Taxi wars. Police executions. Evil, wicked, satanic criminals. I couldn't put it down when I read the kindle book and now again with the audiobook. This was so sad, too, in places. I think every cop anywhere in the world should read this. And especially my South African cop colleagues. This is so, so on the nail. It is brilliant beyond words
