About this listen

Flannery Rivers is content to let her sister, Harper, carry on the family dynasty - at the Rivers hospital where they both work and on the home front. Now that Harper is settled and soon to be happily married, Flannery can ease back into her life of casual flirtations and find all the excitement she needs in the ER. She's even got her next playmate all lined up, or so she thinks.

Abigail Remy is a city girl who accepts a position at the imperiled country hospital in the hope of finding a stable, safe community for her teenaged trans son. Unfortunately, when she arrives to work, she discovers the current ER chief is less than happy to be replaced by a fresh-out-of-residency newcomer. Add unexpected attraction to the incendiary mix of city and country, fire and ice, tradition and change - and the prescription is combustible.

The setting is the Rivers hospital, and the story follows on from "Against Doctor's Orders" and is the second book in the "Rivers Family Romance series". To me, Radclyffe in this novel is building up the setting, and additional characters, in the same manner as the Provincetown Tales series.

In this work I liked the setting and characters. The introduction of a transgender teen Blake and the difficulties she faces brought an additional dynamic to the story. The protective interaction between Blake and Harper adds to the story.

Abby Craden's performance is great! and she brings the different characters alive with her accents and multiple voices.

The story runs along traditional romance lines, but does have a great dramatic moment with a tornado. However, for me the interaction between Harper Rivers and Presley Worth could have developed at a slow pace and, despite the blurb for the novel, there is actually not a lot of conflict between them. I also felt the development of love between them happened very quickly, and more time was needed between these. As a series, I felt it could have been possible to defer the "I love you" moment to a later novel.

Don't get me wrong, it's good and definitely worth a listen, but my feeling is Radclyffe has a great setting and is bringing interesting characters to the series, but more time can be taken to build tension and affection between them.

Nice romance, and interesting settings characters
