Summary

The new honest and hilarious novel from Holly Bourne, best-selling author of How Do You Like Me Now?

April hates men. Her dating life is a disaster and she carries the damage of her last relationship with her every day. She's trying so hard to put herself out there, but every time it seems like she's found something real it falls apart.

If only April could be more like Gretel.

Gretel knows how to behave perfectly in relationships - she's a 'Regular Everyday Manic Pixie Dream Girl Next Door With No Problems'.

Gretel is exactly what all men want.

The problem is, Gretel isn't real.

But once April starts pretending to be Gretel, life is much more fun. Especially when she starts dating Joshua, who has no idea who she really is.

For once, April is the one in control. But how long will she be able to keep pretending?

Deeply affecting and yet somehow uplifting, I literally laughed out loud and had a proper cry at different points of this book. The narration is just perfect and I found the story of women, of resilience and of understanding your own mind to be really moving.

Excellent, and I'm not pretending!

I genuinely enjoyed this book, I heard about it during an interview with the author on the Doing It podcast and decided to give it a go. There were times of the book that I had to pause it and absorb the way April was thinking and feeling. As a survivor of sexual assault I have felt the way April does at times, so this book resonated deeply with me. It is incredibly well written and has plenty of light hearted and funny moments, without detracting from the serious nature of the themes within the book.

Thought provoking

it's terrifying just how relatable parts of this book were and loved the uplifting ending. The book was a breath of fresh air by being so unashamedly feminist yet in no way preachy and extremely human!

fantastic!

Powerful message. Insight into someone that's been raped, the trauma and how it affects how you connect with other people. Heather Long did a great job of reading it.

Refreshingly raw and real
