About this listen

A witty, wise and truthful beauty handbook for real women on what works in real life from Sali Hughes, beloved journalist and broadcaster.

‘Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together’ Elizabeth Taylor

Think of beauty books – cue immediate images of coffee-table photographs of ludicrously beautiful models with few clothes and fewer time restraints, works inundated with ‘up-to-date’ reviews that may as well be Edwardian or holistic mumbo jumbo on how to make a face mask with molasses and some roughly hewn porridge oats.

Not anymore…

Covering everything from teenage skin to that milestone 80th birthday, botox to no-botox, celebration to grief, Sali Hughes, leading journalist and broadcaster, shows real women how to make the most of makeup’s physically and emotionally transformative powers in a work that is part instruction manual, part love letter to makeup – whilst employing a writing style that combines beauty editor, feminist and painfully funny best friend.

Critic reviews

Praise for Sali Hughes:

‘I really love Sali Hughes … She's just really good and trustworthy and I've never had a duff recommendation from her.’ Hadley Freeman, Guardian

‘Oh joy! this is how we like our beauty advice – intelligent, real and stonkingly funny … She’s good, properly honest, with just enough bossy-ness in her tone to make you want to try harder and do better … Bookmark it under ‘essential reading’.’ The Women’s Room

‘Straight talking, super-knowledgeable and one of the most respected beauty writers around’ A Little Bird

‘Known for her thoughtful and witty writing style … Sali is a prolific tweeter who regularly dispenses humorous, no-nonsense style, shopping and beauty advice to her several thousand followers’ Stylist.co.uk

This is the first audio book that I listened to the whole way through. Sally's voice and the way she talks about, quite clearly, her passion is just brilliant. It's prompted me to listen to Pretty Iconic and I beg of her to write and record more books in the near future.

Love it

I normally have my audibles plying in the kitchen whilst I cook and do housework but this has been my relaxation “read” lying in the bath whilst Sali imparts her expert knowledge of beauty products, beauty treatments and skincare. If you’ve found her Guardian columns useful you will enjoy this book. Her narration is soothing and reassuring, you feel you’ve had a girls night in! Also recommended by Sali, Pretty Iconic.

Great to listen to in the bath!

This was more than I expected. It was everything the blurb promised, but the surprise came when I found myself listening to the wedding chapter without fast forwarding, just because it was so lovely to have Sali chatting to me in that lovely, calm, big-sister knows best way, I may not go out and BUY anything new (just yet) but I am taking time to have just 10 minutes to myself at the end and start of every day - so for that alone: thank you Sali.

Delivers more than promised
