Created when they intermingled with demons, the dark elves who rule over the fae of Sinaryos have come to rely on humans to keep their race alive. The royal family is no exception, with a king on the verge of death, a court riddled with spies, and a broken line of succession. Despite everything working against him, Prince Fallon Blackwood has met all the demands of the crown for nearly 100 years...except for one.

After avoiding this obligation for too long, the time has come for him to take a harem and prove that he's capable of continuing his family's bloodline and ensuring their control of the throne. But underneath his cool and calm exterior, Fallon secretly yearns for a much different life than the one he was born into.

Novi Navarro is a working-class barmaid who's used to running her tavern and running her mouth. When she gets assigned to Prince Fallon's harem by mistake, she thinks it's a complete joke. She makes a deal with Fallon for them to both get what they want from this administrative oversight. But when members of the Blackwood Court discover her true identity, she quickly learns that she must beat them at their game...or die.

Contains mature themes.

I came across this audiobook via the plus catalogue. Needed a break from a series, and didn’t have spectacularly high expectations.
However, I quickly found myself hooked and enjoyed the story line. I agree with other reviews, that the writing style is quite clunky at parts, and I didn’t particularly enjoy male narrator putting on the feminine voice(s) for female characters.
However, it was still good listen.
Funny, Spicy, slow(ish) burn, & star crossed lovers vibes. A nice little hidden gem.

Unexpected hidden gem

After listening to a fair bit of fantasy audio recently, this is a bit of a standout. Interesting twist on the usual formula, and I loved the humour in the first half, it actually made me laugh out loud in places.
It was well read, although I did have to substitute a fair bit of it, in my own voice in my head, as I think it was intended, but that’s to be expected with a male reading the female characters.
Some of the writing was clunky or simple, but I overlooked that for the story. My biggest complaint is that it isn’t a full story, and is one of those instances where part of the story is published, to push people into buying the rest of it. It seems to be a thing now. I only use credits on full novels where there are enough hours to guarantee a complete story.

Pleasantly surprised

Bridgetown in a fantasy realm with a great, fiesta heroine and laugh-out-loud moments. What's not to like! What a lovely story!
