About this listen

For fans of epic fantasy… with a slow-burn sapphic twist.

Rebellious Princess Natasia has always known her role: marry a man her father can shape into his heir. But when an assassin nearly takes Tasia's life, everything changes. Someone powerful wants to destabilize the Empire, but who? With no noble family above suspicion, the Emperor takes the extraordinary step of naming his daughter heir. The carefree princess must learn to rule an empire, while enemies circle on every side.

Enter Joslyn, an accomplished swordswoman, assigned to protect Tasia and teach her self-defense. Everywhere Tasia goes, Joslyn follows -- and Tasia resents her presence. But war looms, accusations of treason fly, and angry lords threaten rebellion. One truth becomes clear: Joslyn might be the only one Tasia can trust.

With the Empire on the brink of chaos, can Tasia rise to the occasion -- or will she watch it fall?

Really enjoyed this fantasy book which included a lesbian story in it. It was well narrated and written, can’t wait for book 2.

Can't wait for book 2

This is a beautifully written fantasy book in its own right. There is a lesbian narrative but this book is not erotica. It's dark, believable, gritty low fantasy, written fluently and with guile, whose lead character, Tasia, is engaging and grows as a person as the book progresses. There are unexpected twists and stomach-dropping moments of shocking drama. I am very pleased to be lining up its sequel, Soldier of Dorsa

A flawless fantasy

A captivating novel I found hard to want to leave, Great narration and story. I'm giving it five stars. It's hard for me to say much about the story without giving away elements of the plot, but it follows in the footsteps of fantasy novels with the difference of a central f/f romance. A princess finds she is inline for the thrown and with help of a female bodyguard she learns to take on the role. However, forces conspire against them and her kingdom and she has to fight for her life.

Captivating

Tasia and Jocelyn fast became my favourites, especially Jocelyn. The brutalised, hardened fighter is warring constantly against the racism and boys-locker-room bullshit common in Dorsa and in the real world, against the Middle East. Her love for Tasia is never in doubt and it's shown to be more than mutual on their first night of intimacy, in her fury and pain at seeing just how badly Jocelyn has been hurt in her life, physically and mentally.

Jocelyn's rash sacrifice at the end, bartering her soul for Tasia's sake, will, I think, be one of the main points of book two and I can't wait.

All-conquering love, plain and simple.
