Summary

Imagine the twisted evil twins of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and you have the dangerous duo of Professor James Moriarty - wily, snake-like, fiercely intelligent, terrifyingly unpredictable - and Colonel Sebastian Basher Moran - violent, politically incorrect, debauched. Together they run London crime, owning police and criminals alike. When a certain Irene Adler turns up on their doorstep with a proposition, neither man is able to resist.

An entertaining and wickedly humorous crime adventure from the best-selling author of Anno Dracula.

Critic reviews

"It's witty, often hilarious stuff. The author portrays the scurrilous flipside of Holmes's civil ordered world, pokes fun at 'guest stars' from contemporary novels and ventures into more outre territory than Conan Doyle even dared." ( Financial Times)
"Kim Newman has done something really audacious with Conan Doyle's criminal genius.... The notion of reinventing Moriarty and Moran as malign dopplegangers of Holmes and Watson may have been done before, but not with the firecracker exuberance that Newman brings to it." ( Independent)

I was sceptical after listening to the latest “play” style audio book about Sherlock Holmes which in my opinion was terrible. This however has been the best audiobook I’ve listened to in years. A great antagonist approach to the usual theme. Well written and well performed. Funny and flowing. Certainly worth a listen probably just after you finish the Steven Fly SH series.

A brilliant find

Well read, but disappointing story and without the humour I was hoping for. Lacks any insight into the characters.

Seven stories which merge to make one longer tale - that of some of the exploits of Moriarty, as told by his Dr.Watson (and second in command in the Firm), Colonel Sebastian Moran, the Bloke with the Gun. Holmes might have considered Moriarty to be his nemesis, but for the intruiger in darkness, Holmes was despised, merely an inconvenience, the Thin Man. He considered others far more dangerous.

These well written tales are fun and do introduce some of the characters known to readers of Sherlock Holmes stories. It is interesting to see them from a different perspective. The narration of Tim Hortons is superb, his clear English accented voice perfectly enunciated, with good intonation and understanding. The pace is just right, too, with well placed momentary pauses and elevated emphasis. The voicings of each character was distinctive and appropriate, easily distinguishable from the first person narrative of Colonel Moran.

A book not to be missed by all fans of the 'minor nuisance on the point of becoming a middle sized obstacle', Sherlock Holmes.

That's the beauty of mathematics.

Initially, I found this way too close to the original Sherlock Holmes stories for my liking - same kind of language, mirrored chapter titles - yawn, yawn I thought. However, by the second short story, the narrative opened out and the characters developed a life of their own. It's well worth persevering.

And yes, Colonel Sebastian Moran is a violent, racist, sexist "gentleman" but knows how to spin a cracking tale. If you enjoy Victorian melodrama, combined with a dash of the supernatural and lots of in-jokes for the Holmes fans, you will be in for a treat.

Slow to start, but grew on me
