About this listen

The year is 1952, and E.F. Bloodworth has returned to his home - a forgotten corner of Tennessee - after 20years of roaming. The wife he walked out on has withered and faded, his three sons are grown and angry. Warren is a womanizing alcoholic, Boyd is driven by jealousy to hunt down his wife's lover, and Brady puts hexes on his enemies from his mamma's porch. Only Fleming, the old man's grandson, treats him with the respect his age commands, and sees past all the hatred to realize the way it can posion a man's soul. It is ultimately the love of Raven Lee, a sloe-eyed beauty from another town, that gives Fleming the courage to reject this family curse.©2005 William Gay (P)2005 Brilliance Audio, Inc. An incredibly written story that evokes the casual violence, addictions and inevitability of generational poverty. You can smell the atmosphere of a small part of Tennessee during the Fifties and the despair of rural degradation touches all the lives here. However Gay writes with wit and humour, I laughed out loud in many place, even though the story is dark. There is redemption at the end, not really a spoiler, it is on the dust jacket, and the biblical themes are very prevalent throughout. The late Dick Hill, who left us in 2022 gives an astonishing performance, each character having his/her own nuances. It is difficult with the Southern American accent not to make it sound as if a moron is speaking, Hill never does this. As an aside, the south of America have spawned some of the best writers in the world. This is a read you won't forget, it does demand your attention, give it and you will not be disappointed.

EPIC.
