About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Rage of Swords by David Gilman, read by Colin Mace.

The thrilling new historical adventure in the Master of War series. Sir Thomas Blackstone must travel into enemy lands with a price on his head as he seeks to secure alliances and gold for the Plantagenets' war with France.

1368. Amidst the Hundred Years' War, alliances must be brokered. The Duke of Clarence, second son of King Edward III, journeys from Paris to marry the daughter of the powerful Lord of Milan. Little does he know that he is heading into a trap.

Luckily the Duke is preceded on the road to Milan by Sir Thomas Blackstone, Master of War, on an urgent mission of his own. Blackstone must get his hands on the gold the Prince of Wales needs to wage successful war in France.

But there is a price on Blackstone's head, and assassins willing to risk everything to claim it before he even gets to Milan. He must outwit a succession of ever deadlier enemies, and the Master of War has other foes to conquer: the ambitions of his son Henry, who has inherited his father's knack of getting into scrapes. Scrapes that could end in a hangman's noose...

I took my time with Rage of Swords for one simple reason: I didn’t want it to end. Finishing it meant accepting the long wait for the tenth instalment of David Gilman’s Master of War series and the next chapter in the life of Sir Thomas Blackstone and his loyal band of brothers.

As a devoted fan of historical adventure, I can confidently say no one does it better than Gilman. His commitment to research, walking the castles, monasteries, and battle sites he later brings to life, shows on every page. He builds characters with depth, personality, and presence, and his ability to craft believable interactions makes them breathe. Layer that with a rich historical narrative woven through moments of tension, relief, anticipation, sorrow, and satisfaction, and you’re not just reading a story, you’re inhabiting it.
In this ninth and latest book, Blackstone faces new adversaries and ever more lethal threats. Serving King Edward III and preparing for war, he and his men move through a labyrinth of Italian city-state politics, deception, and assassination attempts. The King’s son, the Duke of Clarence, travels to Milan for a politically vital marriage to the daughter of a powerful lord—an alliance as perilous as any battlefield.

As if that weren’t enough, Blackstone is burdened with the complications of his own family. His mission is critical to England’s war effort, yet his greatest challenge may lie closer to home: navigating his role as a father and confronting the reckless ambitions of his son, Henry. Henry appears to have inherited not only Blackstone’s courage but also his knack for becoming entangled with a woman in distress, a path that threatens to spiral into disaster.

Rage of Swords is another outstanding addition to the series, and once again I’m left eagerly waiting for David Gilman to deliver the next chapter in this remarkable saga.
