Summary

A brand-new recording of the classic work, narrated by Holliday Grainger, star of The Borgias and The Capture.
On a trip to the South of France, a shy young woman falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower. Although his proposal comes as a surprise, she happily agrees to marry him. But as they arrive at her husband's home, Manderley, a change comes over Maxim, and the young bride is filled with dread. Friendless in the isolated mansion, she realises that she barely knows him. In every corner of every room is the phantom of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca, and the new Mrs de Winter walks in her shadow.
Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the other woman. An international bestseller, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.

Oh dear - another reviewer pointed out some of the odder pronunciations and so I got stuck every time on the 'passage' read with a long 'aaaaa'' at the beginning! But the book itself is of course brilliant...

A good book and I liked the analysis of it at the end. Will most likely listen to it again in the future.

A true classic

I loved Holliday Grainger's reading of Rebecca. She gets that clipped 1930s accent just right and her Mrs Danvers is perfect.

A beautiful reading

My favourite book. Love the narration though some words oddly pronounced. There are quite a few repeated lines that need editing and the chapter numbers shown on the display don’t match those read out. Overall though it’s great.

Wonderful story

Rebecca is a shining example of why I need to stop pre-judging classics as stuffy and boring. I never would have read this book were it not gifted to me, and that would have been such a mistake. I opted for the audiobook, as I so often do when my hopes are low, and the entire experience blew me away.

The only thing I knew about Rebecca was that it was the inspiration behind the song Tolerate It, so I had a certain understanding of what the book was about, but the reality was so much more than that. The narrator did an absolutely amazing job. I could not wait for each new chapter - and chapter 20 in particular had me in complete shock from start to finish.

I wouldn't call the characters particularly likeable, but they were certainly engaging, and there was some interesting character growth for the second Mrs de Winter which I really enjoyed.

I can completely see why Rebecca is considered a classic. It is a must read. If like me you're hesitant when it comes to classics, I strongly recommend you listen to the audiobook and give it a try. You won't regret it.
