Great first book from Dave Baird who also provides the narration, perfectly capturing the mannerisms and voices of the West Country! The story switches between 3 main time periods in a series of flashbacks that skillfully bring pieces together to take a mysterious cold case to a surprising conclusion.

Encapsulates small town society & the horrors of war with emotion, heart & nostalgia

Fantastic story, heart warming, harrowing, plot twists, history and for me, local interest. The characters are so vividly described that the reader, or in my case listener, feels they really know each of them and importantly cares about them. The narration by the author really brings the story to life. Before finishing the story I took a trip and climbed the Wotton Hill to check the lines, thinking about all the characters and names on the war memorial who called this place home. I would recommend this book to students wanting to understand WW1 and to anyone who enjoys a great tale. As well as being a fantastic story, this book serves to remind us all of the hardships, horrors and sacrifices made by those who’ve served their country so that ‘home’ can be kept safe.

Gripping

Not for everyone I’m sure but I loved this story even though for someone with memory problems from a stroke I struggled with the darting from era to era.

The description of life in the trenches was so good it was like watching a film and made me think of my stepfather who unlike so many managed to survive the First World War then got through the Second World War in London through the blitz like my mother.

I confess I had tears in my eyes a couple of times which is most unlike me. The writing and narration I found excellent and I recommend Remembrance Day to those with an open mind. I found it a remarkable first novel and look forward to more from Dave Baird.

I’m so glad I took a chance on this novel
