About this listen

Rose Lloyd was the last to suspect that Nathan, her husband of over twenty years, was having an affair, and that he was planning to leave her. But the greatest shock was yet to come; for his mistress was Rose's colleague and friend, Minty. So Rose was left alone in their once-happy family home, where she and Nathan had brought up their children.

Then she started thinking, about the man she'd married, and how well she really knew him. About the carefree yet studious girl she had been before she met him. Twenty years ago Rose had to make the choice between two very different lives. Could she recapture what she nearly chose back then, and bring new meaning to her life now?

Critic reviews

"Wise, melancholy, funny and sophisticated, Buchan's novel is more satisfying than a romance." ( The Times)

Lovely, flowing story. Easy to picture characters. A little predictable storyline, but still a comfortable read

Easy listening

there's nothing new about an older man leaving for a younger woman. but i love Rose's strength and her support and her eventual triumph. Everyone ~ Nathan, Minty and even the boss got what they wanted, but Rose who thought she had lost it all gained the most of all of them, because she was essentially a good person.
lessons for living in that.

well worn storyline

This is a classic of its type, real characters, genuine emotional depth and touching in the detail of the experience. Should be read with 'The Second Wife' which is the other side of the story and brings a true resolution.

Superb story, clever and well constructed

What did you like best about Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman? What did you like least?

Told mostly in narrative form, the story lacks the passion and drama that interpersonal dialogue would have added.

Emotive but definitely not vengeful storyline.

The title did not match the storyline. There was no revenge, more like the main character (Rose) was eventually able to move on after her husband had left her for a younger woman. Prior to moving on, I thought the main character came across as a door mat most of the time. Rose’s adult daughter presented as a spoilt child who had tantrums (not the 20 something she was suppose to be) and this was irritating to listen to. I didn’t warm to any of the characters, apart from Parsley (the old family cat). I thought that when the author flitted back to past memories/events, there were occasions when it was untimely and stopped the flow of what was happening in the present. I found the narrator’s voice most grating, especially when reading with emotion (ie the characters being upset or protesting) and when Rose and her daughter were in conversation, both characters sounded exactly the same and made me think that the daughter also sounded like a middle-aged woman. Not enjoyable for me.

Misleading title for the storyline…
