When I decided I wanted to hear a Zane Grey book, I sampled all the available recordings of "Riders of the Purple Sage" and chose this one, read by Gene Engene because I felt he had the best voice. His deep, rich tones are splendidly authentic to the Wild West world of the book, and I found all of his character voices completely believable. The atmosphere of the story is so well evoked that it made me want to leave my city lifestyle and saddle up a horse and live out on the sage. Brilliant. I only have one very small criticism, and that is that early in the story there were sections where I could hear extraneous noise on the recording itself. It sounded like someone had the radio on in the room next door. It didn't put me off, because as I've said already I was so hooked by the story and especially the performance, but it was a slight distraction.

Very atmospheric, beautifully read.
