Summary

The New York Times bestseller

The #1 Irish Times bestseller

The definitive biography of Rory McIlroy, the most important, popular and confounding player of the post-Tiger era.

Rory McIlroy contains multitudes. The child of a working-class family from a small town in a war-torn homeland now commutes to work in his own private jet and counts billionaires as confidants. He can overwhelm a golf course with his transcendent talent and then, at the next tournament, look utterly lost. In the same press conference, he can be golf’s most eloquent ambassador and a trash-talking troll.

McIlroy’s victory at the 2025 Masters Tournament packed such an emotional punch because he is golf’s most vulnerable superstar. Across two decades as a pro he has been the anti-Tiger, letting fans into his heart and into his world. When McIlroy collapsed onto the final green at Augusta National, having finally completed the career Grand Slam, golf fans cried along with him because so many saw themselves in his struggles.

Known as the most fearless writer on the golf beat for over thirty years, Alan Shipnuck traces McIlroy’s evolution from a young Northern Irish phenom to a game-changing force. Rory brings to life the heartbreaks, triumphs, tabloid romance, business disputes, and divisive politicking to fully define one of golf’s all-time great players.

Critic reviews

'Shipnuck is one of the game’s most honoured and impactful writers, sometimes ruffling feathers but invariably getting to the heart of whatever or whomever is his subject. In this case, it’s McIlroy . . . The book thoroughly details McIlroy’s life and career, sprinkling it with anecdotes and insights that elevate a story that has undeniable magnetism. If you have a sense of who McIlroy is, you will understand him better after reading Shipnuck’s book'

'The world’s top golfers don’t reveal much about their feelings. Tiger Woods and Ben Hogan might as well have tattooed "keep out" on their foreheads . . . Rory McIlroy, by contrast, has always played and discussed his performance with heartfelt feeling. That maybe hasn’t been the best strategy for staying focused under pressure, but it has endeared him to fans and provided Alan Shipnuck with lots of material to work with in Rory . . . Shipnuck produces a rich, nuanced picture by talking to the Northern Irish golfer’s friends, fellow pros, caddies, coaches and business partners'

Listened to this after reading the book. Well researched and written. Made for an easy read with a great flow to it in terms of the timelines and story telling. Didn't rate the audio listen as highly. As an Irishman, it was difficult to legislate for some of the horrendous pronunciation of some of the names ( Both places and people). I'd have expected someone of Shipnuck's stature to have done some better research or asked one of his Irish contacts to verify on this given that the book has been written about someone from the island of Ireland. I will give credit to some of the historical context and explanations around the troubles and complexities on being born in the North of Ireland. All in all , it is worth a read/listen.

More enjoyable to read than to Listen too.

Enjoyable listen covering McIlroy’s career both on and off the golf course. A new chapter now due after his back to back Masters glory.

A very good insight into McIlroy’s career

I found the narration of this book irritating and frustrating, it’s as though he has a bag of marbles in his mouth and time again I asked myself ‘what did he say’…it is such a shame as the story is excellent and shows Rory for what he is, number one, one hell of a golfer and two, a very decent, down to earth human being, brought up by his loving parents who installed in Rory, so many decent values.
Definitely worth a read for the content alone, but next time, do yourself a favour and spend some money on a professional narrator!

Great book, poor narration!
