Summary

After Kurt Cobain's passing in 1994, everyone expected Evan Dando to be next. The Lemonheads frontman, songwriter and actor started in the 80s hardcore scene and went on to become a 90s icon. Think of Evan Dando, and you think of heroin chic, grunge and celebrity burnout. Perhaps known as much for his partying and boyish good looks, after two gold records and the kind of fame that you just can't enjoy anymore, The Lemonheads cooled off and life went on.

Dando grew up in Boston, the son of a lawyer and a model, and attended the prestigious Commonwealth School. Fame was never what motivated him but the lure of the wild life proved trickier to refuse. From sneaking into concerts as a child, to sleeping on floors in the punk rock days, to crashing at Johnny Depp's place in Hollywood, he was right there in the thick of it. So much so that social media once reported his death.

Now, very much alive, sober, and enjoying a life in South America when he's not on the road, Evan Dando is going to tell his own story. His memoir will remind readers what was so great about the pre-internet 90s: the innocence, the access, and the anonymity. Reclaiming the purity and exuberance of his early days and encapsulating the spirit of the era, this candid autobiography presents a portrait of an artist who lives wholly for his music, and one that makes no apologies for doing so.

Rumours of Evan Dando‘s demise have been greatly exaggerated, although quite how he has survived so long is a little miraculous. He is completely open and honest here about the amount of drugs he has taken and about how chaotic his life has often been. There is no redemption arc here. What does shine through is his love of music making and that’s the reason anyone is interested in him. This is an honest and interesting account of his life but perhaps also a bit wearying too.

Raw and unfiltered

Beautifully written. Reading between the lines I sense what happened to Evan back in the 90s, he wasn’t accepted by the indie/rock’n’roll community as he was good looking and from wealthy parents/good school. He hated the persona of handsome rock bimbo. He wanted to prove he was the real deal. My word did he prove it. He unfortunately hasn’t been able to stop trying to prove it. His music is so soulful. This book has encouraged me to reconnect with some of his music I missed first time around. Santa fe on his solo album is some piece of work!

Incredibly humble honest account

I loved this autobiography and particularly loved Evan Dando’s narration. What a life he’s had - successes and crashes in equal measure. It’s well worth a listen and I recommend pausing and listening to some of the bands and songs he refers to throughout too. I love it!

A life story so strange it’s worth telling, & listening to
