About this listen

My name is Bird Howsley, and I'm a beautiful disaster. Okay, "beautiful" is probably being generous. But the "disaster" part is right. In a brutal dystopian waterworld, where survival depends on skill and smarts, I'm pretty much always one bad decision away from watching my life go completely down the drain.

Luckily, I have a lifeline: my cute, level-headed sailing teacher, Sargo Paz. Did I say cute? I didn't mean cute. He's just a friend. I definitely don't have weird sex dreams about him.

Anyway, three days ago, I got a message from a guy who's been dead for ten years. That's odd, right? I came up with a plan to go find him, but it went pretty badly sideways, and Sargo and I ended up in the crosshairs of a very sketchy underground organization that now wants us dead.

We didn't know what else to do except flee into the Salt. Now we're stuck together on Sargo's tiny sailboat, facing down pirates and harrowing seas, and things are getting, um—tense between us.

Oh, and did I mention I've been blacking out? Like . . . a lot?

Contains mature themes.

I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to starting book 2. FMC is different from many books that I read before. She doesn’t have bow and arrows and she doesn’t paint or sing or play piano (shocker, right?!). It’s nice to read a book about a character who is a mess, it’s refreshing. She is well written, her motives are clear, she stays true to her character. Love the MMC too, great solid guy (and obviously hot) with tonnes of patience for FMC and I love him for that 😂

Refreshing

very interesting premise, set after a pandemic the world building is very interesting.
I wasn't the biggest fan of the male main character Sargo but I think there are going to be some interesting turns with relationships etc in this series.
looking forward to listening to the second book

Nothing outstanding about the story, sorry but it just didn't do it for me. If you can put up with the narrator's drawl and rising end note then good for you. The story isn't strong enough to warrant a series and I just don't care enough about the protagonists to invest in any further adventures.

A (little) spicy si-fi with pirates and boats!
Ok, so I didnt like this first book very much, the writing is so so, but the world-building is good. But the series gets much MUCH better, both in regards to plot and writing. I enjoyed book 2 and 3 greatly and the FMC is relatable. Not noble or having some sort of unreachable moral code, just a normal girl who gets mixed up in some shit and discovers things, people and places. Definitely worth your time!

Worth it
