Summary

More heart-stopping action and suspense from the best-selling author of Amazonia and Subterranean....

In his five previous thrillers, James Rollins, the king of speculative adventure writing, has taken listeners on mind-expanding journeys spanning from the top of the world to deep within the Earth’s surface. In this latest voyage of imagination combining hard science with explosive excitement — his most breathtaking yet — he explores the mysterious sands of the Arabian peninsula.

Twenty years ago, a wealthy British financier disappeared near Ubar, the fabled lost city buried beneath the sands of Oman. Now, an expedition of scientists, led by the financier’s daughter, is finally setting off for the legendary metropolis to unlock the desert’s secrets. What they find, however, is more beautiful than they ever dreamed — and far deadlier. Within Ubar is a powerful energy source that could fuel the entire earth above — if it can be harnessed. But before they can resurface, the explorers become trapped. For the same life-giving force that can save the world is about to set off a giant, sweeping storm awesome enough to annihilate everything in its wake....

Cracking story and clever storyline. Very enjoyable, well researched and sympathetic characters, I will buy more of the series.

Couldn't out it down

The way the author draws all the different characters all together and weaves them through these action packed scenes is very well done. It never feels like it’s dragging and is definitely worth a listen if you love action adventure novels.

A fun action adventure

Intriguing and completely absorbing, as usual with the Sigma Force series, which I read in print quite a while ago and, thanks to an Audible special offer, decided to revisit. And I must say, I wasn't disappointed.

Wherever in the world Sigma Force find themselves - and it's a different far-flung destination every book - James Rollins manages to bring it to dazzling life through his unintrusive writing style, and his painstaking, immaculate research.

In "Sandstorm" it's Oman, the Arabian peninsula, and the lost city of Ubar. Admittedly, this is not an area I have (or previously had !) much interest in, and certainly very little knowledge about going into "Sandstorm" ... but it's certainly an area I have a lot more feeling for, a much stronger image of, and interest in, coming out the other side.

Which brings me to the feature that I love best about James Rollins and his books. Each book is an excellent education in the social history, legends, folklore and geography of its setting. And reading them, you can't help but learn fascinating stuff !

It's the same with the science, which always feels completely plausible and is handled with such a light touch that even the most horrendous possibilities - stabilised anti-matter as a energy source, in the case of "Sandstorm" - are explained to a luddite like me in a manner that makes even the most bonkers theories feel solid and weighty. You know he must have some great researchers at hand and knows who to ask the big questions !

And the author is kind enough to separate the fact from the fiction in his epilogue at the end of each book !

My only quibble is with the quantity of mispronounced words...however, I'm happy to see that this narrator, John Meagher (a name I've not come across before) doesn't appear to read any more of the series after this one, so we'll see how we go with book 2.

Even with the pronounciation mis-steps I can still highly recommend James Rollins in general, and Sigma Force series in particular. Perfect holiday reading, and I believe they're on offer at the moment on Audible, so a great opportunity to grab volume 2 (with a different narrator !)...and beyond.

Disliked the narrating! I don’t know why the narrator thinks an English woman sounds like a weak and feeble old lady! Nearly ruined the book for me - if the story had not been so gripping - I would have given up just because of the awful accents of the narrator!

Good storyline - made me want to get to the end
