★★★★☆
This is a lovely short story full of magic and romance. Think Rapunzel locked in her tower “for her own safety” by a worried mother, mixed with a brave but naïve main character who just wants to live her life. The characters are easy to understand and the twists and turns help it stand out from a more generic fairy tale. I would have loved for it to be longer and more fleshed out, as the world and relationships had real potential. The narrator also does a great job, with strong and engaging voice acting.

The sound production and narration is the best thing about this text calling itself a novella. The author admits it is a riff on the Rapunzel tale with a princess closeted in a tower by her mother and emerging to have some fun, becoming a pawn for malign enemies along the way. It has tropes of warlocks and witches in conflict, throwing in magicians who seem to trump both with cards slicing into flesh. I felt it is part of a much larger text and idea as the world-building was incomplete or poorly explained. Conflict between dynasties identifying with gemstones and royalty was also part of the mix, but the genealogy, strengths and weaknesses of the different groupings was not apparent. The ending was abrupt and although it intimates the main character is developing agency, it felt too much of a cliff-hanger.

Good idea inadequately executed: unfinished.

This story is very short so it felt quite rushed and it was hard to keep up with what was going on. I also found a lot of the prose quite basic and therefore it didn't flow very well.

I listened to the audiobook which was just over 3 hours long. I personally was not a fan of the production of this and the occasional music and sound effects felt odd as they would sometimes kick in mid-scene and then abruptly stop.

Overall, this book was not for me.
