You don't have to be a black woman to benefit from this book. I listened initially to this book as I wante to open my eyes to try and understand a different perspective - so different from my own experiences. The definition of racial trauma - being a personal, psychological wound is one that I hadn't thought about enough to truly understand. In the end I have increased my knowledge and empathy and at the same time identified the benefits of self talk and self love for which I am grateful.

My wife has been carrying around pain from her childhood. I got her this audiobook to see if it could help. She listens while getting ready in the mornings or during her commute to work in the Bay Area. The parts about fixing how you speak to yourself really stuck with her. She used to criticize her body and her looks all the time, but now she focuses on what she likes about her hair, skin, and figure. Our marriage improved a lot too because she learned how to ask for support in ways that build us up instead of tearing down. She makes time for herself now, like exercising or just relaxing without guilt. The advice feels real and comes from someone who's been there.
