About this listen

A journalist’s provocative and spellbinding account of her eighteen months spent disguised as a man.

Norah Vincent became an instant media sensation with the publication of Self-Made Man, her take on just how hard it is to be a man, even in a man’s world. Following in the tradition of John Howard Griffin (Black Like Me), Vincent spent a year and a half disguised as her male alter ego, Ned, exploring what men are like when women aren’t around. As Ned, she joined a bowling team, took a high-octane sales job, went on dates with women (and men), visited strip clubs, and even managed to infiltrate a monastery and a men’s therapy group. At once thought-provoking and pure fun to listen to, Self-Made Man is a sympathetic and thrilling tour de force of immersion journalism.

This audiobook is expertly read by Barrie Kreink. It was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, LLC, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont.

I first became aware of this after seeing posts on social media about it. So decided to check it out and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't just a political stunt. It's clear early on that Norah took this project very seriously. Unfortunately it seems, to the detriment of her own mental health.

I won't go into specifics, but this is well worth a listen/read especially if you're interested in the subject but don't want to be preached at. Norah stresses upfront that these are purely her experiences and should be read as such.

Shout out to the narrator who's delivery was heartfelt, charming and occasionally genuinely funny.

It's such a shame that she's no longer with us. I hope you've found peace Norah RIP.

A well written personal journey.
