Summary

A book for clinicians and clients to use together that explains key concepts of body psychotherapy.

Written for therapists and clients to explore together in therapy, this book is a practical guide to the language of the body. It begins with a section that orients therapists and clients to the volume and how to use it, followed by an overview of the role of the brain and the use of mindfulness. The last three sections are organized according to a phase approach to therapy, focusing first on developing personal resources, particularly somatic ones; second on utilizing a bottom-up, somatic approach to memory; and third on exploring the impact of attachment on procedural learning, emotional biases, and cognitive distortions.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

I was afraid it was going to be boring as it is a handbook rather than a novel, but the reader was very good and managed to make it engaging as much as it is possible for a book like this to be engaging. The contents were very clear but you really need to do the worksheets alongside it to understand how to apply this approach. Lots of food for thought for therapists looking to expand their way of working beyond talking therapy.

I have always had my reservations about CBT top down processing to treat trauma as well as severe anxiety and this gives me great tools to try experiments with my clients as a therapist. I have to buy the book now though to get access to the worksheets. Thank you to the authors for an important contribution to trauma informed treatment / self help.

In depth, practical, innovative and enlightening

This book helped me understand myself on a whole new level and heal a bunch of trauma. I also shared some insights from it with friends and they invariably found them really helpful. I have been recommending it to everyone, just about! I enjoyed the clear writing style, the experience and clarity of mind of the authors and the compassionate and focused tone of the writing and delivery. I haven't yet tried the workbooks but just hearing the advice to therapists and the core chapters has really been valuable. Many thanks to the authors and narrator.
