About this listen

Kate Winthrop, the only child of a wealthy shipping magnate, has the course of her life charted for her by her parents. She's expected to marry well and produce a successor to the Winthrop empire. But Kate has a very different path in mind. Her true passion lies with photography - and with women.

Alone in the city after losing her brother, Sicilian immigrant Giuliana Russo starts working for the Winthrops as a maid. Despite their different social status, Kate and Giuliana become friends, much to the dismay of Kate's parents.

As the connection between the two women grows, a devastating earthquake hits San Francisco and ignites fires that sweep through the city for three days and nights.

Will the disaster shatter their tentative feelings for each other, or will they find the courage to save each other's lives - and their hearts?

Contains mature themes.

I loved the storyline very much. It was so engaging, exciting and so beautiful. I really enjoyed how the women were portrayed, strong and independent. I loved how the main characters discover their love for each other throughout the storyline. How in all the chaos, sadness and stress in the story they always end up with each other. I definitely recommend anyone to read this book

One of the best books I've ever read

This book was really beautiful. I think I enjoy Jae's historical romances even more than the contemporary ones! The love was beautiful and lovely.
And the setting was written so well. The earthquake was horrifying and scary and really drew me in.
The humanity of the different characters was interesting with the contrast between the Winthropes and the people coming to each other's aid and helping out. And even the Winthropes started to show a little compassion.
I really liked Lucy. It was cool to see her and hear a little about the ranch.

Wonderful!

I listened to 'Shaken to the Core' for a second time, before it was removed from the 'Plus Catalogue'. Spend a credit on this audio, it is so worth it ! The story and narration is 5 stars any day of the week ! Samantha Cook lifts an already top notch story, it is only a shame she is not used more in this genre !
The way the author 'diarises' the events works really well, although a fictional piece it's like a real life tale.
Jae the only thing that would make this better is knowing there's a sequel, tell us how Kate, Juliana and 'Lucy' are getting on. I like the 'nod' to the also 'excellent' Oregon' series (and Lucy should get a HEA)!

Excellent !

I’ve been looking forward to this book for so long... I was sad when Jae said that it wasn’t likely to be made into an audiobook (and she had very kindly gifted me a copy of the ebook which I was planning to read on our flight to San Francisco last year) but then I learned that it was going to recorded for audio and I decided to wait for the audio version.
In just the first few minutes I wasn’t in my little house in the UK, I was on the pier looking out across the bay to Alcatraz Island with the sound of the sea lions singing. Thank you Jae.

I felt like I was back in San Francisco
