About this listen

In The Path out of Hell psychotherapist Carolyn Cowan reveals a ground-breaking approach to working with the emotion that hides lurking behind most forms of human suffering: shame.

The path you will take through this book will reveal what shame is, how you ended up with it, what you have done with it, and how to create change.

It is an epic journey for which Carolyn has a thoroughly road-tested map. The end goal is to ask you to make choice to change and take responsibility for that in a way that you will have never heard, nor conceived of, before.

Having walked the path through this process with hundreds of individuals in client work and workshops, Carolyn’s new book aims to shed light this core aspect of maintaining good mental health that no one is publicly talking about.

When you feel shame, you react in ways that allow you a fast escape out of it, often harming yourself, or others, in the process. These reactions become habitual and lead to labels and disorders.

Anxiety, addictions, obsession and compulsion are what we do with our sense of shame. They are coping mechanisms. They are put in place to avoid feeling shame. This, especially over time, makes our coping mechanisms extremely important to us.

Until you’re willing to work with shame, you will keep putting down one coping mechanism to pick up another. Do you want long term change? Are you brave enough to walk with Carolyn on the path out of hell?

An extraordinarily powerful and transformative work

Finally a root cause analysis of what lies beneath all mental illness. And even better, what to do about it, where to start. Delivered masterfully, compassionately and with humour too. The antithesis to the overwhelm from many of the other reductionist titles and fractionating into endless diagnostic labels. Freedom.

Sublime.

It’s wonderful to listen to Carolyn talk on this topic. I’ve attended her yoga teacher training where she also talks about this. Carolyn challenges the mainstream and provides a safe space to consider your own behaviours. Highly recommended!

Brilliant ‘workbook’ to deal with your shame

I have been a student of Carolyn Cowan for 5 years - specifically her Kundalini Breathwork practice community and training, and I attended one of her groundbreaking (I don't say this lightly!) Shame workshops in London in 2022. The Shame book is outstanding, as it articulates both the mechanics of shame, and the 'map out of (shame) Hell' to quite Carolyn. If you are serious about learning to reparent yourself and stepping into self-acceptance, and ready to believe in the possibility of deserving peace and joy from within, this book is for you. Carolyn will guide you with clarity, humour and truth, as long as you are committed to helping yourself. Thank you, Carolyn for this amazing gift! With love. Veronika x

Shame: The Path Out of Hell is challenging and supportive in equal measure. It is an unflinching invitation to take ourselves on - to look honestly at what has shaped us, and at the same time, it offers a real, tangible path toward liberation. What makes this book so powerful is that it does not simply invite transformation; it shows us how. It offers clear guidance, hope, and a sense that this work is possible.

A joy of the audiobook is that Cowan narrates the book herself. This gives a powerful sense that she is right there, walking firmly beside the reader throughout the journey - this definitely helps to make the work feel manageable. Even when the material is confronting, the process feels supported and, at times, surprisingly enjoyable!

I am profoundly grateful to have found this book. It offers so many people the chance to step out of suffering and into something freer, more in line with, and true to themselves. What a gift. Thank you Carolyn Cowan.
