Summary

Man vs Machine

It is 1895, and Sherlock Holmes is settling back into life as a consulting detective at 221B Baker Street, when he and Watson learn of strange goings-on amidst the dreaming spires of Oxford.

A Professor Quantock has built a wondrous computational device, which he claims is capable of analytical thought to rival the cleverest men alive. Naturally Sherlock Holmes cannot ignore this challenge. He and Watson travel to Oxford, where a battle of wits ensues between the great detective and his mechanical counterpart as they compete to see which of them can be first to solve a series of crimes, from a bloody murder to a missing athlete. But as man and machine vie for supremacy, it becomes clear that the Thinking Engine has its own agenda…

Lovegrove really understands Conan Doyle and writes Holmes and Watson with the insight, wit and guile that understanding affords him. The voiceover is similarly excellent with more than a passing resemblance to the Basil Rathbone era. This series and the more left of field Cathula stuff is utter joy. More please James!

Writing's great as usual, but it's still annoying when easily fact-checkable mistakes appear, as they often do within Kleinman's Holmes series. FYI Hungary is not and has never been a Slavic country (Holmes refers to Houdini's Slavic accent and then specifies Budapest/Hungary as his place of origin).

Everything about this is top notch except Oxford and would grace a tv series but the pronunciations aren’t spot on - especially Magdalen College! - (Maudlin)

I do like this series and I find the story and narration really easy to listen to. I think the story isn’t quite as vibrant as others in the series but it still keeps the attention.
Have to agree about some mispronunciations which should have been picked up, not just Oxford specific vocabulary but the wrong emphasis or mispronunciation of some common words which irritated me a bit this time eg ‘gravelly’ for gravely. Having said that I think the narrator is really good: he keeps the story at a good pace, tells it well and I like the way he brings the characters to life. I’m happy to ignore the little foibles!

I have enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes books by James Lovegrove read by Dennis Kleinman. An good performance marred by some execrable mispronunciations of some common English words. I see Mr Kleinman is from South Africa.
