Summary

Follow Holmes and Watson on their first espionage mission to Imperial Germany as they unmask the plot behind the Kaiser's premature accession. This case initiates a quarter-century of Anglo-German rivalry that will occupy Sherlock Holmes until His Last Bow, when World War I begins.

The story follows Holmes and Watson on a political mission to Imperial Germany in Victorian times. They unmask and try to foil a plot to prematurely kill off emperor Fredrick the third by forces determined to allow the Kaiser to assend to the throne. Watson shines in the story using his medical knowledge to expert use. Holmes has arguably a lesser part but is still his usual self deducing things. There are superb descriptions and prose used to describe the characters and the atmosphere in Germany at this time. I particularly like the details regarding Sherlock's description of a horse and the effect of a voluptuous painting may have on new recruits. Ultimately there is no 'the games afoot' moments and Holmes affectionadoes may lament the lack of action. However, it is a fine story well read and suitable with a cup of tea and a biscuit on a Sunday afternoon by the fire. I actually listened to the story walking round the park during lock down which shows the benefit of Audible.
