A thrilling chase as Sherlock Holmes is set a fiendish puzzle by Irene Adler over a snowy London Christmas, in this mystery

Sherlock Holmes’s discovery of a mysterious musical score initiates a devious Christmas challenge set by Irene Adler, with clues that are all variations on the theme of “theft without theft”, such as a statue missing from a museum found hidden in the room it was taken from.

In the snowy London lead-up to Christmas, Holmes’s preoccupation with the “Adler Variations” risks him neglecting the case of his new client, Norwegian arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen, who has received a series of threats in the form of animal carcasses left on his doorstep. Could they really be gifts from a strange spirit that has pursued Nansen since the completion of his expedition to cross Greenland? And might this case somehow be related to Irene Adler’s great game?

Whilst I finished the book it was more because I thought it could only get better.

Plot (such as there was) was convoluted and based on very tenuous links and assumptions.

Performance was odd in that SH sounded very unlike any expectation. Perhaps that was deliberate but was a bit offputting.

Just about okay

A glorious romp, featuring many of our favourite characters, with excellent narration. A perfect listen while baking mincepies

A seasonal delight

Terribly boring storyline, and the characters are bizarre and not like any other Sherlock Holmes stories I've come across. The narration is awful, and the attempts at accents just cringe worthy. Norwegian turns to Welsh and a little Punjabi at times; Sherlock himself is rude and grumpy. Dr Watson seems to be the more intelligent and sensible of the two in what is a complete role reversal for these characters. I now understand why this was free.

I tried to like this...

Excruciatingly bad narration and ludicrously unconvincing story
This was so badly read the voices used killed the characters particularly of Holmes

Appalling

I am an avid listener of anything Sherlockian, but this one I'm giving up on. The narrator is just so bad! I've been really enjoying Dennis Kleinman reading other Sherlock Holmes stories, and his voices, timings etc are spot on. This chap seems to be overly dramatic about mundane things and sort of plodding.

Narrator is bad so very hard to tell if good story or not!
