Before partnership with a former army doctor recently returned from Afghanistan, Sherlock Holmes had but the quiet company of his own great intellect. Solitary he might be, but living as he did for the thrill of the chase, it was enough. For a little while, at the least, it was enough. That is, until a client arrives at his door with a desperate plea and an invitation into a world of societal scandal and stage door dandies. Thrust deep in an all-consuming role and charged with the safekeeping of another, Holmes must own to his limits or risk danger to others besides himself in this the case of the aluminum crutch.

This is a clever story which is narrated in a very workmanlike manner. However for me it just doesn't work as a Sherlock Holmes story. It is supposed to be a typed manuscript found by Watson after Holmes has died detailing a case before he knew Watson.
The issues that I have with this are that the prose is far too flowery for Holmes ever to have written, and it also details him being upset and displaying all sorts of emotions. As anyone who is familiar with the original Holmes storis will know that he is known for is his iron control over his emotions and also his straight to the point language.
So for me this definitely works as a very enjoyable Victorian era detective story, but not as a Sherlock Holmes story. I was also disappointed to hear Americanisms creeping into the text, for example no-one in Britain at the time would ever refer to something being 'a couple of block away' they would give the distance in yards or miles.
I did like the narration and thought that it sounded like a genuine Victorian gentleman reading the story.

After listening to an intense thirty hours series it’s always nice to take a break and listen to a short, easy to understand and enjoyable audiobook like Sherlock Holmes.
