Summary
Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.
The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.
I've spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.
I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.
But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father's throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.
Now I'm crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn't choose and a husband I barely know.
Everyone wants me to be something I'm not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.
But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there's power in being underestimated?
And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

It does start a little slow, but I actually think the graphic audio makes that easier to settle into. The immersive sound effects and music really bring everything to life, the forest scenes in particular were so well done, and I loved the full cast narration.
I really enjoyed the banter between Odessa and the Guardian, it genuinely made me laugh. There’s such a sharp, sarcastic edge to their dynamic and it just worked. And the slow burn was 👌🏻👌🏻
I love Odessa! I feel like if I ever ended up in a romantasy, this would absolutely be me. Not great with a sword, can’t fight, doesn’t pick things up straight away, and falls down a lot… yeah, painfully relatable.
The plot twists were a mix, some I guessed, others completely caught me off guard 👀
And that last 100 pages? Pure chaos. That ending?! I’m so glad book 2 is already out because I need to know what happens next.

Again, the performances really make this. The voice actor for Evangeline in particular is so cute; having the child's voice in the middle of these quite dark and dangerous moments really adds to the jeopardy level, and her mischievous nature is only enhanced by the innocent lilt to the various "confessions". And yes, out two leading performers put in one hell of a shift. I may still not be entirely convinced by Odessa as a character, but I'm certainly convinced that I like her more because of the performance.
I'd like to say that I was surprised by the plot twists that happen in this part, but that wouldn't be true. My hunch from the throne room was spot on, I worked out certain other hidden identities quite early too, and there was generally just something about the path of the story that made it feel relatively predictable. It's still a solid romantasy book and gives you everything you want from the genre, but it lacks that OH MY GODS moment that would elevate it higher up the totem pole for me.
That aside though, I really enjoyed the various 'set pieces' that brought drama, flair and tension to the book. Everything from coming face to face with the King to battling monsters to confessions big and small; it all felt really well-balanced within this part. I listened to this basically straight through; it was engaging and enjoyable to hold my attention, exciting enough to elicit gasps, giggles and growls from me, and yet soothing and relaxing enough that I could keep listening even with a screaming headache. I enjoyed that it actually gave the character the time to wander around the city and talk to eachother and to have somewhat 'normal' days while also maintaining enough underlying tension to build nicely towards those action-packed moments.
And the introduction of a fluffy cute animal sidekick is definitely not something I'll be conplaining about - I want a Faze! Again, I have thoughts as to what that's going to lead to, but I guess we'll see.
The set up for the next book is interesting... but I'm concerned that it could mean essentially two parallel stories, and given the amount of travelling in this book I'm just hoping that one of the characters finds a shortcut so that they come together sooner rather than later. I will certainly be reading it, especially when the Graphic Audio version drops!
