About this listen

Now in development as a feature film with Amazon MGM Studios, with John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad attached to write the script!

Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I've spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father's throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I'm crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn't choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I'm not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there's power in being underestimated?

And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

Contains mature themes.

I decided to listen to this book on a whim, I saw one person say it was a 6 star read and dove head first hard. I loved it. I freaking loved it, what was that ending?! I don't know if it was the story or the narrator but I had all the feelings. The yearning and desperation in this book is beautiful. I really have to go back to how good the narrator was; she absolutely smashed it out of the park. If you like fantasy that is heavy on romance then you will for sure eat this up. I have no idea when the next one is out and I'm already desperate for it. So, so good.

Emotionally Devastated

…then at the very end we get Jason Clarke. Oh. Dear. Me. No. Who wants a book narrated like a 90s movie trailer voice-over? If we’re getting him for the next book, I’ll pass.

It was going well…

I hate when books are advertised as two narrators when it’s mostly 1 narrator throughout!
Male narrator only narrates the last 5 minute chapter. Female narrator does the male voices throughout the rest of the book and does the voices infuriatingly low.
Made it very difficult to listen to the book in the car or when doing any house work as you actually can’t hear the voices.
Especially irritating as there’s a lot of times where male characters are talking or saying things important to the plot. Main narrator did well with female voices otherwise just really let down by the ridiculously low male volume.

Story itself was enjoyable, plot twist felt quite predictable and story became quite repetitive at some points, however kept me reasonably interested throughout.

Interesting story, terrible male narration

Interesting characters, gradual world-building, mystery, suspense, intrigue and excellent narration - this book has everything you could want in a romantasy novel.

Enthralling and original!

The male VA felt a bit off until the end where it changed, otherwise the story was interesting and makes me look forward to the next book

Very good, not sure about the male VA
