Early Trollope, a bit verbose but marvellous exposition of the psychology of the characters. One has to accept the social mores of the time(1840s 1860s?) but I was still annoyed by the ending.

Wonderful reading by Tony Britton

As a bit of a Trollope addict I enjoyed this novel which I'd not previously listened to or read. Great writing, suspenseful, but with a sad ending and none of the usual wry humour which Trollope normally excels in. I must commend the narrator Tony Britton: this book was acted outstandingly well. It seemed like a whole cast of different actors were playing the various characters with great accomplishment. I'd love to hear more Trollope novels acted by him.

Great acting, solid story but a tragedy & no fun

Such a load of old twaddle that it was gripping, and so beautifully narrated.

Fascinating

We’re so used to Trollope’s wry humour & the satisfying ending to his stories, this pulls you up a bit short.
Nevertheless less I really enjoyed this book. The character narration was excellent apart from interpretation of the money lenders voice.
I think Anthony Trollope needed to tell things how they often are.
