Not even the Church of the Invincible Sun is invincible - and somebody has to do its dirty work. Enter Sister Svangerd and her accompanying priest, both accomplished practitioners. Their mission is simple: to make a meddlesome princess disappear (permanently).

To get to her, they must attend the legendary Ecumenical Council, the once-in-a-century convening of the greatest spiritual minds the world has to offer. But when they arrive, they find instead a den of villainy that would make the most hardened criminal blush.

To complicate matters further, it appears that some people long considered dead might not be after all. What began as a simple murder is about to escalate into a theological debate of terrifying complexity.

From World Fantasy Award-winning author K. J. Parker comes a devilishly clever tale of murder, intrigue, and existential crisis.©2026 One Reluctant Lemming Co Ltd. (P)2026 Little, Brown Book Group Limited

Excellent read the fans of the author. Not bad place to meet him either! Dry humour, twisty plot. Unreliable narrators all around

Parker is back!!

I would preface this with I love kj Parker books so I am an easy audience for them.

One reviewer chose to consider it as a blasphemous book, listening all the way through to the end I think it just shows an interesting take on religion from a lot of perspectives - the non believer who yet has a strong interest, the fanatic, the political believer and then on to the plain fantastical.

I enjoyed the book if not his best is definitely well worth a listen and it’s well done, so overall I’d go with a high rating - probably a 4.5 but the app only lets me do 4 or 5 :)

I am interested to see where the story goes over the next books.

I enjoyed the narration and the conflicted take on religion

Die hard fans of K.J. Parker’s dry, idea-driven fantasy may enjoy the cynical humour and the sustained interrogation of religion, morality, and power. Unfortunately, the irreverent treatment of faith read as blasphemous to me, and the philosophical focus felt excessive rather than meaningful. I did not finish it and returned the book.

Disappointed
