Summary

The exciting first book in a new Dune trilogy

It is 83 years after the last of the thinking machines were destroyed in the Battle of Corrin, after Faykan Butler established himself as the first emperor of a new imperium.

War hero Vorian Atreides has turned his back on Salusa Secundus, flying off to parts unknown. Abulurd Harkonnen, convicted of cowardice, was sent away to live on gloomy Lankiveil, and his descendants continue to blame Vor for the downfall of their fortunes. Raquella Berto-Anirul has formed the Bene Gesserit School as the first Reverend Mother. Descendants of Aurelius Venport and Norma Cenva have built a powerful transportation company using mutated Navigators who fly 'spacefolder ships'. Gilbertus Albans has established a school on bucolic Lampadas teaching humans to become Mentats. Even so, decades after the defeat of the thinking machines, anti-technology fervor continues to sweep across the human-settled planets, with powerful fanatical groups imposing violent purges....

A must for those interested in digging deeper into the back story of Dune. Great story and brilliantly narrated- thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fantastic Storytelling

You're hard pressed to find better authors.

A fantastic story with such an arch, but well written across all three books. So many characters across so many years. But the pace is perfect, I'd read the books, but could stop listening.

Excellent narration and characterization by Scott Brick.

Another excellent Dune story.

I've read about 75% of the available Dune books, in print, and had started sisterhood of dune a couple of times without being able to stick with it. The audiobook version is, in my opinion, a very engaging way to experience the story that is otherwise a little slow to start and has a cast of characters that took me a little longer to engage with. I'm glad I've managed to experience the story now - when it picks up, it is a pretty wild ride with some unexpected turns and yet doesn't do anything too severe to contradict known events from either the main Dune series or the jihad trilogy. It does occasionally fall into the trap of going out of its way to explain certain things/certain school abilities and traits that perhaps did not need explaining, but isn't as egregious as say the star wars prequel trilogy. Some of the action scenes feel like they borrow heavily from movies that did occasionally make me roll me eyes but are enjoyable enough. A few character names are obviously inspired by other works and I remain absolutely convinced there is a very niche one off reference to the musical "Shock Treatment" in the throwaway name of Farley Denton. (Frank - if you ever read this or my tweet, I'm absolutely dying to know if this is the case!)

I did have some infuriating issues with audible, with two occasions where it randomly decided to jump back 100 or so chapters, which made it harder than necessary to pick up again. I also did a lot of the listening during my commute via Android Auto and there were some strange issues at times with the screen saying that it was resuming from where I'd left off, but the audio was chapters behind. Overall, a reasonably good book and I am sufficiently engaged to carry on the trilogy.

A decent addition to the Dune Universe

With the exception of The Battle of Corrin (too much like Warhammer for me) the prequels have been great and Sisterhood is another good romp with some familiar names. Excellent.
