About this listen

Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd.

But six years haven't come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd's obituary, he can't keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd's wife he's hoping for... but she is not Natalie - and Jake's world is turned completely inside out.

As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can't be found or don't remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake's search for the woman who broke his heart - and who lied to him - soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on carefully constructed fiction.

I really enjoyed this book, my first Coben novel. Though I have to admit that there are so many twists and turns that by the last few chapters I quite literally had no idea what was going on. So I sacked off the last couple and got another Coben book. I saw from other reviews that some don't line this narrator but I think he's great, nice voice, great range of voices (women sound like gremlins but I can kind of forgive that). All in all, an entertaining book that I can recommend.

So many twists!

I have read a number of Coben's thrillers and like the others, this one immediately grabs you with intrigue. However it didn't really offer anything different from his previous tales.
Dare I say it was a bit too formulaic? Yes, I think so. I tired of the same techniques that I had read in his previous books and although overall I enjoyed the experience, I was left feeling a little unsatisfied. Good but not great

Classic Coben?

Would you consider the audio edition of Six Years to be better than the print version?

I love Harlan Coben's books but this is the first I have listened to instead of reading and I was surprised how much listening to it added to my enjoyment. The narration builds up the tension and often had me on the edge of my seat

What other book might you compare Six Years to, and why?

It could be compared to any of Harlan's other (non Mylon) books. Always brilliant- you can never guess the twists and turns and there's a surprise round every corner

What does Kerry Shale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The thing I like especially about Harlan's books is that his main characters are generally people that I really like! Kerry reads this perfectly- Jacob comes across as a warm, loving and occasionally flawed human being so that you feel drawn into the love story at the heart of this thriller.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Mainly the fact that Jake couldn't and wouldn't let go of his love for Natalie and of course the end.

Any additional comments?

Can't wait to listen to more of Harlan's books!

Clever plot

Although I quite enjoyed this book I was disappointed as normally with Harlan Coben I find the book hard to put down or in this case would want to keep listening. It was not as exciting as his older books and I do prefer those old characters.

So so

The start of this story is a great idea and I had been looking forward to this book for some time. However the final few acts disappointed me so much, the more I got to know the main character the less I liked him as the plot took him on less and less likely twists and turns. Kerry Shale does well with the characterisation and voices but sadly I couldn’t even be bothered to find out what happened in the end.

Great premise but....
