Summary

When a move to a new house coincides with his baby sister's illness, Michael's world seems suddenly lonely and uncertain.

Then, one Sunday afternoon, he stumbles into the old, ramshackle garage of his new home, and finds something magical. A strange creature - part owl, part angel, a being who needs Michael's help if he is to survive. With his new friend Mina, Michael nourishes Skellig back to health, while his baby sister languishes in the hospital.

But Skellig is far more than he at first appears, and as he helps Michael breathe life into his tiny sister, Michael's world changes for ever . . .

Skellig won the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children's Book Award and is now a major Sky1 feature film, starring Tim Roth and John Simm. David Almond is also winner of the 2010 Hans Christian Andersen award.

Refusing to read this book on the grounds that you are not a child makes as much sense as refusing to read crime fiction because you are not a criminal. A deep and lovely book. (Nick Hornby)

Beautiful book. An unusual story with parts to make you laugh, cry and wonder. I am sixty years old and I loved this book to bits.

Being narrated by the author somehow added to the authenticity of the story. David Almond's understanding of the story, characters and setting as he imagined it, is beautifully portrayed in the narration.
The story is most definitely one of my favourites and it was a pleasure to read it with my year 5 class, who were also fully engaged. The story inspired our newspaper report writing about a strange mysterious creature / human being discovered.
Definitely recommend

A small simple story but has such a big impact, would be great for a book club review. I read my son's review he had written whilst at school which is what prompted me to want to read this book. I truly believe it was a gift from his spirit soul to ease the aching pain of my grief.
