About this listen

LA homeboy Magdaleno Argueta is desperate for a fresh start out of gang life, but after doing time on a frameup, he finds the only door open to him is continuing with his clica, the Cyco Lokos. He figures he’ll stay in for a while to save money to get away from Los Angeles with his girl, but his archrival homie Rico sees him as a threat and schemes to get Mags out of the way forever. Mags plays right into Rico’s hands, only realizing what his homie is up to after it’s too late. Then Mags must make a difficult sacrifice to save his family and himself.

Drawn from the author’s extensive interviews with street gang members in Los Angeles and San Salvador, this noir crime novel explores a poor immigrant family’s struggle to survive in a gritty world where gangs appear to offer youth a way out but instead ensnare them in a dead-end life. Note, the cover shown is the old edition. There's a new, much better cover.

This was a good listen. It’s not typically my style but I really enjoyed it. It’s a little gritty at times, looking into gang-culture and it’s clear the author uses her own experiences in life to portray these characters in a three-dimension way.

It’s a well done and well written story with a likeable protagonist. The conclusion was realistic. I was very impressed by this one!

The narrator here took me a little getting used to. I’m not sure what it was, the accent took me a while to adjust to. It didn’t sound natural to my ears, but once I got over the initial adjustment I did like the narration thereafter. Great work at voicing each character individually and keeping me, as a listener, invested on this journey. Very engaging narration and enjoyable despite that slow start for me.

Good, well-paced story

Loved listening to the narration of Andre G. Chapoy

Magdaleno is just out of prison for, gun possession. Mags had been framed by Rico. Mags trying to straight bur Rico has other ideas and plans. The escalating tension between Mags and Rico creates suspense and I thought the homies were very vivid.

Ex-prisoner on parole Magdalena is desperate to turn his life around and leave the gangs behind him, but getting a job is difficult so 1 last job getting some quick money should do it, then out. His rival Rico who is top at the moment, but Magdalena takes over and he is now 2nd which will put his back up and he pl;ays Mag, and low and behold Mags falls right in it, death and destruction follow

The author has done a lot of research on all her novels but I have to admit I'm not really a big fan of gang warfare novels and as always once in never out and in many cases the only way out of a gang is in a box or prison very dull prospects.

The narrator was very good but as this is about Mexican immigrants in L.A. the narrator used a lot of Spanish words that could be hard to understand fortunately I lived in Spain for 8yrs so picked up a few bits of Spanish.

The Author Christina Hoag has written a couple of other novels "Law of the Jungle" superb and "The Blood Room", unfortunately, this was the least one I enjoyed.
